May 2013 Friends of St. Matthew’s scheme was introduced, many of you will be familiar with other “Friends” organisations for historical buildings, hospitals and other churches, and the Friends of St Matthews will support our church in our community.
Why have a Friends group?
St Matthew’s Church plays a large part in the lives of many members of our community and the aim of the Friends is to fund projects that will ensure the building is adequately equipped to serve the needs of the community today, as well as into the future. The friends will support the PCC as they work to develop our grade 2 listed building to meet these needs. It will also provide opportunities to meet socially.
There are a large number of individuals and families who have a connection with St Matthews for a variety of reasons and feel real affection for the church, if you are reading this you are likely to be one of them. Maybe you were married here, or went to school at St Matthews; moved away but still have fond memories such as of walking days. Maybe you simply pass the church regularly, play sport in the field behind or hear the bells. You could even be a regular churchgoer who wants to give more than planned giving. Whoever you are, you will be welcome to become our Friend, and support us.
What will the Friends group be doing?
We will be having 2 social events a year, and produce 2 newsletters for our members. Our group page will keep our Friends up to date with progress. We welcome suggestions from our members for events and activities. Our launch event was an evening of “Songs from the Musicals” with David Wheeler and friends on 10th May 2013.
In addition to becoming a Friend there will be opportunities for individuals to become involved in supporting the organisation of the group - and you don’t have to be a church member.
How can I become a Friend?
Download the form or contact a member of the Friends Team.
Introducing those already involved in Friends of St Matthews.
There are 4 of us who have worked to set up and launch the group:
a Reader and PCC member - co-ordinating the Friends
a resident of Lower Stretton – treasurer
a PCC and choir member – publicity
a PCC member – web editing
We look forwards to growing in number and making a real difference to our wonderful church building.
