The primary duty of a church choir is to lead God's people in praise and worship, which is something St Matthew’s Church Choir very much enjoys doing. Once again this has been a busy year for the Choir supporting services, weddings and special occasions. As funeral services are increasingly seen as ‘celebrations of life’, the Choir is regularly asked to sing at them, often performing uplifting hymns and special requests. We are very pleased to be able to support all church events, in a time when many churches are no longer able to maintain a choir.
St Matthew’s Choir combined with singers across Stretton & Appleton Thorn to form an ‘extended’ choir to sing at the St Cross Carol Service on the 13th December and also the St Matthews Carol Service on the 20th December 2015. This was very well received at both Carol Services and the extended choir also came together to sing at the opening service for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity on Sunday 24th January 2016. This is something we are keen to repeat and preparations are in place for a similar coming together for Palm Sunday at St Matthew’s Church at 4:30pm on Sunday 20th March 2016.
Once again we have had the pleasure of working with a range of organists, including David Wheeler, Sue Buchan, Catherine Edwards (and the Music Group) and Rose Jewell. This enables the Choir to sing a really wide range of music and is able to benefit from the knowledge & experience of a range of talented musicians. Also the appointment of Rose Jewell as Director of Music means we once again have a planned and focused programme of music throughout the year.
The Choir is always keen to receive new members and we are pleased to welcome a new and enthusiastic chorister to Sunday morning worship, Louise, who appears to be enjoying the experience. Unfortunately, the Sunday evening choir attendance is now quite low, so any interest in singing at Evensong would be greatly appreciated.
Why not make a New Year’s resolution to join the Choir? As you can see we have lots of fun, enjoy serving the Church and everyone is so enthusiastic about the music.
The music group has continued to grow this year and has welcomed new members. We encourage the introduction of new songs into the services, particularly the All Age Services. This year we also took part in the St Matthew's Patronal Festival service, and some of our musicians supported the Carol Services and the Choir at Christmas.
All musicians who have ability to sight read are welcome to join.
